Prolonging the Magic is anchored by two career highlights in “Never There” and “Sheep Go To Heaven”. Both tracks are required listening for any self-respecting Cake fan, and both epitomize this record’s mix of more melodic songcraft with seriously idiosyncratic production decisions.

“Sheep Go To Heaven” features a full children’s choir behind raspy horns, while the other standout tracks include “You Turn the Screws” and the surprisingly sunny “Let Me Go”, although “Satan Is My Motor” and “Hem of Your Garment” are also worth mentioning.

Overall Prolonging the Magic is more consistent than Fashion Nugget, and Prolonging the Magic is arguably the best Cake record behind Comfort Eagle.
