For their fourth album, what would become America Eats Its Young, Funkadelic decamped to Canada and the UK to record. They returned with a sprawling set of socially conscious and decidedly experimental songs that feel like a tour through the history of black music in America. Far better than its reputation and chart placement would suggest, America Eats Its Young is full of strange and bewildering deviations to all corners of the musical world. Showcasing a group refusing to repeat a formula, its also a crucial stepping stone in their journey to world-conquering dominance.
